When Two Kids Out Hike You: A Morning Lesson in Grit
It was 4 A.M. The alarm rang. And there they were, my 8- and 10-year-old kids ready to go. No complaints, no grumbling, just excitement.
By the time I had fully woken up, they were already imagining the view from the summit. And it hit me: if they can wake up before sunrise, lace up their boots, and hike for the joy of it, what’s stopping the rest of us?
This October, we’re taking that same spirit of adventure and turning it into a challenge: the Forge & Freedom Side Quest: Big Slide Sunrise Hike on Sunday, October 5th, right when the fall foliage is at its peak.
This isn’t your average walk in the woods. This is a sunrise challenge. A chance to meet the mountain, capture the morning light, and push yourself, just like my kids do every weekend.
Here’s what you need to know:
When: Sunday, October 5th
Where: Big Slide Mountain
What to bring: Coffee, your camera, hiking boots, and a little grit
Spots available: Only 8, free to join
It’s not about being the fastest or the strongest. It’s about showing up. Rising early. Experiencing something few ever see. And maybe, just maybe, discovering that spark of adventure you thought you’d lost.
So, will you snooze, or will you meet the sunrise?
